La reacci\u00f3n se puede detener en cualquier momento, con lo que no se desperdician reactivos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consta de tres balones de vidrio, los dos inferiores conectados entre s\u00ed y el superior terminado en un embudo, encajado en los anteriores de forma herm\u00e9tica gracias al esmeril. Con el orificio inferior tapado se introduce en el bal\u00f3n del medio el reactivo s\u00f3lido (por ejemplo m\u00e1rmol, zinc o hierro, de un tama\u00f1o lo suficientemente grande como para que no pueda pasar a la parte inferior) y en la parte superior el \u00e1cido diluido que se va a hacer reaccionar (por ejemplo \u00e1cido sulf\u00farico o clorh\u00eddrico). A medida que el \u00e1cido (reactivo l\u00edquido) va reaccionando con el s\u00f3lido se va generando el gas, que se recoge a trav\u00e9s del tubo del segundo bal\u00f3n, captur\u00e1ndolo, por ejemplo, en un frasco de woulff para utilizarlo en otra reacci\u00f3n.
