HELLO MY NAME IS LISA

Hello! My name is Lisa and I am thrilled to be a Language and Culture Assistant at Carlos III this year! It has been wonderful getting to know all of the students, teachers, and parents these past few months…thank you for the warm and enthusiastic welcome.

Since many of you many not know me well, I would like tell you a little about myself…

I recently moved from Seattle, Washington (United States) where I had lived for many years. I grew up about four hours away in a small town in eastern Washington called Walla Walla, where my family still lives today. Washington is a beautiful state and if you ever have the opportunity to visit, you won’t be disappointed!

I have many hobbies and interests that fill my time. I love ❤ teaching and helping students learn English…! When I have free time, I enjoy the opportunity to explore and travel around Spain and all of Europe. I am looking forward to visiting as much as I can throughout the upcoming year. I also enjoy practicing yoga, reading, and spending time with my family and friends.

I wish you all a happy holiday season! I will be traveling to Cabo, Mexico where I will be meeting my family for a couple of weeks. I am looking forward to the warm sunshine and beach, eating tons of Mexican food (my favorite!!), and some quality time with my mom and nephew. Happy holidays to you all!

CARNIVAL 2017. MARDI GRAS FROM THE LADY WITH THE BALLON SKIRT.

There has been an excitement in the air for the last few months. Beads have been hand crafted then threaded together, jesters crowns made from scratch and mothers and grandmothers must have been diligently and skillfully sewing bright costumes for the children at Carlos iii. As the Friday of carnival approached classes became a little wild with an undercurrent of expectation, I however had no idea what was about to happen… As I walked into classroom 5A on Friday the 24th of February, the room had already erupted with a golden yellow, purple and green. Children were sitting at their desks trying to concentrate on an english question while wearing face paint and masks, hats with glitter, necklaces full of brilliant beads and bells attached, and to make matters worse the auxiliar (me) had a camera pointed at them while they worked and I was videoing their every move as they set up the “mannequin challenge”.

When 12.00 arrived I pulled on my own costume and headed for the exit. Crowds of parents, grandparents and onlookers lined the street to watch the parade led by the 6th graders who were wearing predominantly purple, crazy glittered accessories and ear to ear smiles; the excitement was palpable and the ‘Mardi Gras’ banner flying high.

The procession continued with every grade strolling down the center of the street in one of the 3 traditional colours of Mardi Gras.

There were incredible homemade hats and painted masks made from handprints or paper plates and tutus were everywhere. The teachers had gone wild as well: adorned with bow ties, lei’s (floral necklaces), homemade skirts, waistcoats, overalls, extremely bright wigs, masks and much more.

As I was able to walk alongside all of the grades I got to see each group as they passed their proud families, taking photos and waving.

Whole classes danced and spun as they made their way down the road; their golden tassels flying out behind them. Another class, from infantil, were dressed as 1920’s ‘strong men’ (and women) with large moustaches, 100kg weights and muscles bulging. One grade were fire breathing magicians in green stripes and flowing capes. The fire billowing from their mouths was cleverly made of cardboard and attached to a stick: authentic without being a fire hazard.

And the youngest classes looked like a purple garden, with floppy petal hats and long crape dresses and even brightly stickered water bottles.

The school’s mascot, ‘Charlie’ was pulled on a very ornate float, led by a human sized version of himself (a very sweaty sixth grader in the mascot outfit) and a giant fish!

The procession ended as we entered the playground, but for us the party had only just begun.

Leading up to this event, most mornings before school started, a particular song had been played over the loudspeaker many, many times. It has mainly non verbal lyrics and the tune is very catchy. I thought it was always being played because it was the music teacher’s favourite song or maybe a more sinister indoctrination was happening.

However my questions were answered in the next 10 minutes when the entire school broke out into a choreographed dance accompanied by that very song “ide ide ideoooow”. The infantil classes stomped their feet to the rhythm, the different grades spun around in a storm of colour, and smiles radiated from everyone, even the very serious auxiliares.

The terrific day came to a close with dance competitions, a million photos of teachers with their classes and some very long conga trains.

From the anticipation and preparation of this carnival, the procession down the street in incredible costumes, to the ‘Fiesta’ in the playground which followed: this day will be in my memory for years to come as a spectacular event, and one I was so lucky to be a part of.

BLAST FROM THE PAST

MARIE CLAIRE: I loved it, it was so special! Thank you so much for letting me do it.
